During the Chinese New Year, I was thinking of updating the hardware configuration of my wife's laptop. The fact is I don't want to carry the T410 from/to work anymore. I want only carry a remote hard disk with me and sync files using FreeFileSync

I then started to investigate all the possibilities of updating this old machine. The main focus is to find the bottleneck and fix that. Here is the hardware configuration before the update:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 (WinXP RTM)
Mobile DualCore Intel Pentium T2370, 1733 MHz (13 x 133)
1GX2 DDR2 SDRAM 533 MHz
HITACHI HTS542516K9SA00 (160 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA)
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-T10N (DVD:8x, CD:24x/24x/24x DVD-ROM/CD-RW)

Since this is a laptop, the CPU could not be updated. And I think nowadays, CPU is no-longer the bottleneck of PC performance. Since there should be no resource consuming tasks on this machine. So I guess the memory is enough for daily work(checking mail/reading docs/little programming etc). Updating the hard disk performance is attractive to me. SSD is cheap enough for daily work. The lifespan is also solved by manufacturer. It seems a good point.

So the system performance could be boost with update of hard disk, but what about the system/data migration process, where did the HITACHI hard disk go after the update?

Here is the beauty of ThinkPad design, R61i bundled with UltraBay Enhanced. The HITACHI disk could also live in system with a ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter. Problem solved and here comes the buying and hands on moment.

The Intel? X25-M Solid State Drive, 80GB SATA II 2.5in, MLC, High Performance costs me ¥1299.00 on Newegg. Since I am planning to put only the Operating System and program on SSD, I guess 80G is big enough.
The ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (40Y8725) costs me ¥110.00 from local vendor.(OEM)

1. Download the software
Intel provided very useful tools for SSD.
Intel? SATA Solid-??State Drive Firmware Update Tool  - Used to update the firmware on SSD, a ISO file.
Intel? Data Migration Software - simplifies the moving of the contents of your old storage device to your new SSD.
Intel? Solid State Drive Toolbox - accessing SSD management features.

2. Update the SSD firmware
Connect the SSD to thinkpad, burn the ISO file to a blank CD, boot from it and do the update. It went smoothly and finished within 1 min.

3. Migrate the data
Plug the HITACHI hard disk back, connect the SSD to thinkpad via a remote hard disk box. running the data migration software to migrate the system to the new disk. The migration is disk level, so it tries to move all your data on the original disk to the new one. The whole process takes around 2 hrs.
The disk layout of HITACHI is:
C:/ 40G/25G free
D:/ 110G/65G free

The disk layout of SSD after migration is:
C:/ 20G/5Gfree
D:/ 55G/10G free

4. Connect all disk to thinkpad
move SSD to the main disk bay, connect HITACHI to Ultrabay with adapter.

5. Repartition the harddisks
I don't need duplicate data in the system, so I delete the D:/ partition on SSD and make the C:/ on SSD using the whole disk. I reassign D:/ to HITACHI's second partition to make it same as before the migration. A little Partition Magic trick fix all this.

The whole process went smoothly and the disk performance did boost after the update. Follow ups could be the tweaking of SSD from Operating System side or may be updating of the Operating System(Windows 7 has TRIM function which provide better support of SSD) and  a little benchmark.

According the Intel's roadmap of SSD(leak version), there will be a new release of SSD in 1Q. I may focus on this to see if the price could goes down a little bit.
